Chapel by the Oak Tree

Location: United States

At West Virginia, USA

A Scandinavian church for West Virginia, we took up this project with utmost enthusiasm when the US-based client offered us the opportunity to craft a modern interpretation of a Scandinavian church. After extensive research into Scandinavian church architecture and the local West Virginia context, we were able to design the spacious and unique chapel that is envisioned here.

Located in a field of Maple and Pine while focusing on a towering Oak, Large floor-to-ceiling openings from all sides let the sunlight galore into the building while a framed view designed towards the Oak symbolizes the cross in a traditional church. Wood and concrete were used in tandem for both the structure and the interiors as requested by the client alongside a design concept that aims to stand the test of time and weathering of nature.

As with other holistic buildings we have designed before, our aim extended to building something that reaches beyond the traditional realm of a religious building and provides its people with a spiritual intervention that heals the mind.
