At Bali, Indonesia
Set amidst the verdant landscapes of Bali, we designed this holiday retreat primarily using treated bamboo, a material deeply rooted in the local tradition. The ‘Pelupuh’ roofing system, comprising interlaced layers of flattened bamboo shingles, provides a distinctive local architectural touch. As requested by the client, we opted for a simple and symmetrical structure so it can be used as a modular unit to be repeated in the future. Surrounded by lush vegetation and trees, the building is designed to withstand the tropical climate, featuring large eaves to shelter from torrential rains while promoting natural ventilation.
We chose Bamboo not only for its sustainability, fast construction, and strength but also for its suitability and familiarity with the use of local labor. Inside, the retreat offers comfortable accommodation with three separate bedrooms and a shared pantry, catering to holiday stays for small touring groups. The design prioritizes functionality and comfort, providing a peaceful haven for guests to unwind amidst the serene beauty of Bali’s natural landscape.
