Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
This 8-bedroom boutique hotel is located on 25 perch land in a residential zone of the sacred city of Anuradhapura. The building resembles the Architect’s trademark minimalistic forms with added luxury interiors requested by the client, targeting the upper-middle classed tourists to the city.
The design was developed introvertedly due to the surrounding residences and the lack of scenic views. In addition to the 8 bedrooms (including two family-sized luxury suites), the hotel contains a center pool, bar, gym, and a functioning rooftop. The central courtyard provides views of the rooms while the open-to-sky courtyards are used to subtly manipulate light to enhance the volume of limited spaces inside. Front closed & open sky bay courtyards are also used to obtain light without compensating for the privacy of the tourists.
By and large, the architect has attempted to blend his usual minimalistic forms with luxurious interiors to separate the travelers from a congested context as they continue to explore the ancient city.
