Kurunegala, Sri Lanka
Located at the center of a 1-acre estate (coconut land), the single-story five bedroom house designed for a government client blends traditional spaces with a modern form. A site prone to flooding led the building to be elevated from the ground hence an existing high ground of the site is carefully picked for the setting out.
Inspired by vernacular courtyard houses found in Jaffna, the architect links living spaces together through visual links with each other and a captivating paddy field and stream facing the rear end.
Developed as a low-cost house, the 5 bedroom single-story house consists of earthy finishes while the center-sloping feature roof and custom-designed furniture further add to the traditional touch.
